Paper Horses: Women, Witchcraft and Sex is a solo exhibition by our very own Amelia Johnstone which will open at the Material Gallery on the 17 September 2010.
Press Release
“The paper pony folds herself up and is carried by the moon dwellers who are there to remember that they do not matter; that they are far away and nothing to the world, yet they gain perspective, to establish a stance; so that when they return in their varied capacities, they are BOLDER, BETTER, OBJECTIVE.”
In the latest addition to her growing band of alter egos, the Paper Pony forms the basis of Amelia Johnstone’s latest collection of work in which she takes you to the moon, to laugh a little at the folly of our self obsessed human condition and sits with her friends. Talking, thinking and reflecting on the things which seemed to matter before, but now no longer do.
Saddened with the world, with it’s self indulgent, obsessive, greedy, blinkered culture, there is a wealth and richness in cultivating rather than consuming itself; eating itself, the voyeur narcissisticly boxed in bell jarred place.
Angela Carter writes of ‘the Curious room, crammed with wonders’ (1978), Amelia believes this room is the universe, crammed with curiosity and wonderment, rich enough to pass around, to carry in your pocket, like the paper pony, something you wanted can be imagined, in the imagination anything can happen, it is important to step back and remember that.
Join us in exploring Amelia’s latest addition to her band of alter egos with a hot ticket to Material’s London store and her latest exhibition “paper horses, witchcraft and sex”
“Paper Horses, Women, Witchcraft and Sex” will be on show at Material’s London store and will feature prints and original work from Amelia along with a range of wares designed in collaboration with the gallery.
Exhibition runs Thursday 17th September to 16th October 2010
